Often the uninitiated misunderstand what role chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists play in the lives of athletes and think that all we are about is “keeping your spine aligned”. Although this is not untrue, it is far more accurate to think of your care as “the clinical science of keeping you moving in good quality motion”. Good movement is the end product of a number of systems working in harmony. The way you walk, stand, even chew are all relevant to good, injury free performance. It is then you realize that all aspects of you are important to us and understanding and improving you helps you to achieve optimum performance. We will also need to look at the emotional, nutritional as well as the mechanical “you”.
The seasoned athlete knows that absolutely everything is important for top performance as the next person on the starting line, in the ring or on the pitch is just as fit, just as well trained and just as determined as you and being “almost there” is not an option.
At our clinic you will be assessed by a whole series of tests and questionnaires and by the end of that we will know more about you than you ever thought possible. We will know your strong points, your weak points and help you make the best of it all.
Mr. Vossen was a prolific amateur athlete (read: Jack of all and master of none) back in his day competing internationally in Judo, nationally in swimming, badminton, basketball and on track the long jump. Tentatively dabbled in the high jump, never made it to multi-eventing, did some spare-time running including the annual 100km “death march”, a few marathons, sprint and half triathlons and used to enjoy the odd skiing season when life permitted it. Nowadays he is looking after some of this country’s finest athletes and is very proud of having been asked to support youth athletics to minimize injuries in the young and maximize our chances in international competitions.
“The principles are simple, if you move well; you have less pain. Performance improves because you have a fuller range of movement and you are less at risk of injury. If you move badly you have more pain, worse performance and greater likelihood of injury. That is why anybody who is serious about sports should be serious about getting the best out of their whole being. Actually scrap that; everyone should be serious about getting the best out of their whole being.” Mr. Stefaan Vossen, Clinic Director

“I’ve been going to see Stefaan for some years now. I’m an ex-international athlete having competed at 3 Olympic Games and won a gold medal in the CommonwealthGames in 1978. I went to Stefaan because I heard he understood sport and thought he would be able to help me with my back which had caused me finally to give up athletics when I was 32 years old. Stefaan not only helped me with my back, he helped improve an old neck injury I got in a car accident and, more recently has advised me as I’ve suffered difficulties in my knees due to arthritis.
Stefaan is always helpful and always ready to fit me in if I have a relapse. It’s good to know I have that support and it helps me manage my condition and get on with my life. Stefaan not only understands how my life as an athlete has shaped the way that my body works now but also how I approach my injuries and ailments in order to get on with my life. I will always be indebted to Stefaan for all he has done for me.”

“I first met Stefaan when I needed help with a back problem that I developed whilst training for the hammer. I’ve been a hammer thrower for many years and have competed at international level. Stefaan was able to fix my back problem quickly but also gave me very sound advice on how to prevent it happening again. Although he had never treated a hammer thrower before he soon understood the mechanics of my event and how I could train better to achieve more and stay healthier at the same time.
Since those early days Stefaan has treated a number of other underlying problems that I had built up in my years of throwing and he has always born in mind my athletic ambition and desire to train and throw, advising me on how best to work around issues whilst they existed and maintain them once improved. There is no doubt that Stefaan has helped me extend my athletic career and throw further. I will always be extremely grateful to him for what he’s done for me.”
